Professional Profile

About Susan Fineran

Dr. Susan Fineran is professor emerita at the University of Southern Maine School of Social Work and Women and Gender Studies. Her professional career includes clinical experience in the areas of aging, substance abuse, child and family treatment, intimate   partner violence, sex discrimination, sexual harassment, and women’s  issues. Her research interests include peer sexual harassment and bullying in schools and the mental health implications for children and adolescents. Her current work has focused on campus sexual assault and she is a recipient of three U.S. Department of Justice,  Office on Violence Against Women Campus Grant Awards totaling $900,000 (2009, 2013, & 2017).

Her research has been influential in U.S. Supreme Court cases. Two of her early studies were cited in amicus briefs regarding the responsibility of schools to provide an environment protected   from sexual harassment by peers [1999 United States Supreme Court, Davis v. Monroe County Board of Education (97-843)].

Dr. Fineran’s research has also focused on the effects of bullying and sexual harassment on sexual minority youth and she has been an advocate for instituting more prevention education to combat sexual harassment in K-12 schools. Additionally, she has conducted the few studies examining  sexual harassment of working teenagers in high school. This research has been highlighted in a number of national publications including; The Washington Post, Good Housekeeping, E-Zine AlterNet, Family Circle, The Oregonian, and   NASW News.

Dr. Fineran currently consults in the Greater Boston Area and would love to hear from school  (K-12 or university) or workplace administrators looking for prevention education  training for staff or students on sexual harassment or gender based violence (domestic or dating violence).  She is also interested in offering her expertise on Title IX issues that educators may be struggling with.  She has been the moderator of the International Coalition Against Sexual Harassment (ICASH) listserv  for the past 25 years which can also be found on Facebook.   https://www.facebook.com/INTERNATIONALCOALITIONAGAINSTSH/
